Reimagining Dugnad: The Birth of Wayd
Short Summary
In 2020, I connected with two Norwegian founders on Upwork for a small design task that grew into leading the product design for their digital platform, Wayd. As the sole designer, I provided end-to-end services, including branding, mobile and web app design, and Webflow development. My work helped secure funding rounds and take Wayd from MVP to a fully launched product. We conducted two design sprints in Prague and one in Oslo, where we also met app customers to gather feedback and refine the experience.

Description
As the sole designer on the Wayd project, I was responsible for crafting the entire mobile application from the ground up. Over two years, my work encompassed a wide range of tasks, including conducting in-depth research, running user testing sessions, and iterating on designs to deliver both a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and the final polished app. Collaboration was a key part of the process. We held several in-person design sprints and ideation workshops to generate and refine ideas. Through this collaborative approach, we conceptualized and tested various innovative features that enhanced the app’s functionality and user experience. My role was to ensure that every design decision aligned with the core mission of simplifying community fundraising while creating an intuitive and engaging platform for users.
Why
In Norway, the tradition of Dugnad has long been a cornerstone of community life, bringing people together to support local causes through voluntary efforts. While Dugnad fosters a strong sense of unity, it often requires significant time and effort from participants. Recognizing this challenge, the founders of Wayd envisioned a modern, digital alternative to streamline community fundraising.

Wayd was created as a mobile application designed to "skip" the manual tasks of Dugnad while preserving its spirit. By introducing a subscription-based platform, the app empowers supporters to contribute directly to local sports clubs. This innovative approach not only simplifies the fundraising process but also ensures clubs can focus on what truly matters—developing young talent and fostering community spirit.
Solution
The traditional Dugnad system, while rooted in community spirit, often places a heavy burden on parents of young athletes. Organizing and participating in volunteer work, such as cleaning sports pitches, selling cookies, or managing events, demands significant time and effort. These tasks, while crucial for raising funds, frequently clash with the busy schedules of modern families.

A recurring issue is the uneven participation in Dugnad activities. Many parents actively contribute their time and energy, while others remain passive, creating an imbalance that affects both morale and productivity. Despite the effort invested, the financial outcomes for sports clubs often fall short of expectations, leaving clubs to struggle with funding essential resources for their teams.

This outdated system called for a better, more efficient solution—one that could adapt to today’s fast-paced lifestyles, reduce dependency on physical volunteering, and involve the entire community more effectively. The need for modernization and inclusivity in fundraising became the driving force behind the creation of Wayd.

🇨🇿 Design Sprint in Prague, Czech Republic
Our first product workshop in Prague, Czech Republic, was a deep dive into shaping the future of our application. Over the course of three intensive days, the two co-founders, our development leader, and I collaborated to define critical user flows and explore how to seamlessly integrate Stripe for payments. From brainstorming sessions to mapping out user journeys, every moment was dedicated to aligning our vision with practical implementation. Whether in meeting rooms or late-night hotel discussions, we worked tirelessly to ensure a solid foundation for our product’s next steps.

For Rask Stallions, I designed a range of merch that brought the club's identity to life while serving a greater purpose. The vision was to complement the traditional subscription model with an online store, offering fans and supporters a fresh way to contribute. Just like our previous efforts to replace the old-school 'dugnad' with modern digital solutions, the online store provided a seamless way to generate funds for the club’s future actions and needs—turning every purchase into a meaningful contribution.

🇳🇴 Design Sprint in Oslo, Norway
Our workshop in Oslo, Norway, was a game-changer for the project. This time, I had the incredible opportunity to meet our users in person, visit the RASK offices, and experience firsthand how the application was being used in real-life scenarios. Over the course of three days, our focus was on defining the next set of functionalities and shaping the product roadmap. A key challenge was enhancing the in-app content to drive user engagement. Through collaborative discussions, we introduced a variety of post types—such as 'results' and 'voting'—along with essential features like 'comments & replies,' all supported by user notifications to keep the community active. Additionally, we explored the idea of 'tasks,' encouraging users to complete specific actions or invite others to join the community, creating a more dynamic and interactive experience. Seeing the app in action and engaging directly with users provided invaluable insights that fueled our next steps with clarity and purpose.
