Role
Solo Designer, Product Design, UX/UI Design, Graphic Design, Webflow Development
Description
As the sole designer on the Wayd project, I was responsible for crafting the entire mobile application from the ground up. Over two years, my work encompassed a wide range of tasks, including conducting in-depth research, running user testing sessions, and iterating on designs to deliver both a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) and the final polished app. Collaboration was a key part of the process. We held several in-person design sprints and ideation workshops to generate and refine ideas. Through this collaborative approach, we conceptualized and tested various innovative features that enhanced the app’s functionality and user experience. My role was to ensure that every design decision aligned with the core mission of simplifying community fundraising while creating an intuitive and engaging platform for users.
Why
In Norway, the tradition of Dugnad has long been a cornerstone of community life, bringing people together to support local causes through voluntary efforts. While Dugnad fosters a strong sense of unity, it often requires significant time and effort from participants. Recognizing this challenge, the founders of Wayd envisioned a modern, digital alternative to streamline community fundraising.
Wayd was created as a mobile application designed to "skip" the manual tasks of Dugnad while preserving its spirit. By introducing a subscription-based platform, the app empowers supporters to contribute directly to local sports clubs. This innovative approach not only simplifies the fundraising process but also ensures clubs can focus on what truly matters—developing young talent and fostering community spirit.
Solution
The traditional Dugnad system, while rooted in community spirit, often places a heavy burden on parents of young athletes. Organizing and participating in volunteer work, such as cleaning sports pitches, selling cookies, or managing events, demands significant time and effort. These tasks, while crucial for raising funds, frequently clash with the busy schedules of modern families.
A recurring issue is the uneven participation in Dugnad activities. Many parents actively contribute their time and energy, while others remain passive, creating an imbalance that affects both morale and productivity. Despite the effort invested, the financial outcomes for sports clubs often fall short of expectations, leaving clubs to struggle with funding essential resources for their teams.
This outdated system called for a better, more efficient solution—one that could adapt to today’s fast-paced lifestyles, reduce dependency on physical volunteering, and involve the entire community more effectively. The need for modernization and inclusivity in fundraising became the driving force behind the creation of Wayd.
